Roy Lichtenstein was an American artist best known for his role in the development of pop art. Born on October 27, 1923, in New York City, Lichtenstein gained fame for his distinctive paintings inspired by comic strips and advertisements. His works are characterized by bright colors, black outlines, and a technique that mimics printing dots, known as Ben-Day dots. Lichtenstein studied at Ohio University and later at the American Academy of Fine Arts. Initially interested in abstract expressionism, he turned his artistic direction toward pop art in the 1960s. His early works in this style, such as "Look Mickey" (1961), quickly gained recognition and made him one of the leading figures of this movement. Lichtenstein was a master of irony and pastiche; through his works, he commented on and critiqued both consumer society and high art. His famous works, including "Whaam!" and "Drowning Girl," provoke reflection on mass culture and the role of images in the modern world. The artist received numerous awards and honors, and his works are found in the collections of the world's most important museums, such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and Tate Modern in London. Roy Lichtenstein died on September 29, 1997, leaving a lasting mark on the history of 20th-century art.
